How UVC Sterilization Works

According to their biological effect, ultra-violet rays can be grouped into 4 bands based on their wavelength.

A-Band (UV-A): Known as Black Spot Effect, contributes to skin tanning

B-Band (UV-B): Known as Erythryma Effect, can cause sunburn

C-Band (UV-C): Known as sterilization ultraviolet (280 – 200nm)

V-Band (V-UV): Known as vacuum ultraviolet, used in scientific equipment

Out of these 4 bands, 254nm UV-C band has the strongest sterilization effect on germs, bacteria and viruses.

It does this by destroying the DNA and RNA of these microbial cells and particles causing them to die without being able to spread and reproduce.

UVC Sterilization Vs Normal Air Purifiers

UVC sterilization devices typically are able to purify up to 99.99% air particles, while many conventional air purifiers can only go up to 99.9%, even with HEPA air filters.

The difference might seem small, but this means for every 1,000,000 germs in a room, a conventional air purifier would leave 1000 germs, while UVC sterilization will leave around 100 germs, a 10x reduction.
